23/02/10 - Cape craft shines in unique cultural laboratory at Design Indaba Expo
Cutting-edge contemporary work from 23 leading Western Cape craft producers and designer makers has been selected for the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) Handmade [Cape] shop at Africa’s top designer platform, the Design Indaba Expo.
The CCDI stand occupies 30m² of prime space, showcasing décor and homeware, fashion accessories and craft art. It should appeal to a wide spectrum of viewers, from casual browsers seeking a small memento, to international buyers on the lookout for new lines for global retail outlets.
CCDI market access manager for local and international markets, Jo-lene Sathorar, said the CCDI had exhibited at the DI Expo since its inception. “We have over 1350 enterprises on our data base, and for this iconic expo we selected high-end products that are original and unique, with a strong design element.”
Sathorar said the CCDI had chosen a natural history theme for its latest stand, in contrast to the minimal, sophisticated style followed in 2009. Botanical-inspired products are displayed under glass bell jars, fauna specimens and artifacts intermingle with organically shaped craft products in a rich and diverse cultural laboratory.
“All the items are for sale,” said Sathorar. “Buyers can order directly from the craft producers; alternatively we have our Handmade [Cape] Wholesale division that links craft producers to both retail buyers and companies wanting select handmade objects.”
The Design Indaba Expo 2010 is open to the public from Friday 26 February to Sunday 28 February 2010. The CCDI occupies stand D9.
