CCDI FabLab facilitator Pieter Cilliers shows seven-year-old Reddam House (Tokai) pupil Aidan Collis and his mom Chanel Collis some design details at a Cape Craft and Design Institute workshop for children at the recent Design Indaba Expo.Young visitors to the inspirational Design Indaba Expo were encouraged to unleash their creative talents at two Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) children’s workshops held on 27 and 28 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The children followed a process whereby they made a model of a rhino which was cut into segments. These segments were then used to create a 2D plan which could later be further developed at the CCDI’s FabLab. The FabLab concept originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and offers the use of design software linked digitally to manufacturing technology. The Cape Town FabLab is housed at the CCDI’s headquarters at 75 Harrington Street, Cape Town. “We normally use 3-D design software on a computer, but at the workshop followed this process by hand,” said FabLab facilitator Pieter Cilliers. “The children developed a plan that they can now take to the FabLab to explore further.” Aidan Collis, a seven-year-old pupil at Reddam House in Tokai, was one of the children who enjoyed testing out their new skills in the funky workshop setting that was decorated with luminous place mats, colourful seating and low workshop tables. “I’m a graphic designer and always on the lookout for enrichment for children,” said his mom Chanel Collis. “I’ve been at the Design Indaba before, so jumped at the idea of a workshop as I knew Aidan would enjoy it.” Caryn van Rooyen, Design Indaba Expo project manager, said: “We believe that young people should be building on a foundation of understanding about the creative industry – the significance and relevance of design in the world as well as the joy of creating in everyday life.” The CCDI FabLab is an assisted DIY facility. General access (not including workshops) is free to all, including the training. Access times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons (12h30 – 16h00) and Saturday mornings (09h00 – 12h30).
