Cape Craft and Design Institute 2012 Handmade Collection - First call for applications

The Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) is calling on Western Cape craft producers and designer makers to submit innovative handmade craft and design products for inclusion in the prestigious 2012 CCDI Handmade Collection.
Work will be selected by a board of esteemed designers, retail gallery owners and curators. The products will be unveiled at the iconic Design Indaba Expo in February 2012 to retail buyers and collectors from South Africa and worldwide, as well as showcased in a glossy catalogue and on the CCDI website.
The materials can be anything from ceramics, wool and textiles, to glass, wood and metal; previous selections have included items such as mosaics, beadwork, embroidery, lighting, jewellery and even homeware made from recycled plastic, fabric waste and bottle caps.
Last year’s selection, for example, ranged from a leather and steel chandelier to a collection of lifelike proteas made from cardboard, and even a ‘crown’ of recycled magazine paper, wire and cotton thread.
The only limits are that the final product must not measure more than 1x1x1 metres. The curators seek originality, innovation, local distinctiveness, integrity and skill in the chosen craft or design area.
Soon to be in its fourth edition, this annual Collection reflects the increasing sophistication and flair of Western Cape handmade products.
“Given Cape Town’s shortlisting for World Design Capital 2014, there is renewed interest from around the world in our creative people and products,” said CCDI Communications Manager Marjorie Naidoo. “This is a wonderful opportunity for craft producers and designer makers to show just how bold and skilled they can be.”
The deadline for entry of display items by photograph is Friday 2 December 2011 at 15:30.
