The CCDI Handmade Collection

The CCDI has, over the years, held notable craft competitions and exhibitions to encourage innovation among craft producers and designer makers, and to promote the Western Cape craft sector.

These have included world [piece] 2003, FREEDOM [ten years] 2004, Afro-Deco Master Crafters 2005, Picasso and Africa in craft 2006, wire+plus [this is my Cape Town] 2007, ICONIC [craft] 2007, and various lighting, décor and textile competitions.

Now, the very best of Western Cape handmade items are showcased in the annual CCDI Handmade Exhibition Collection. The Collection is chosen from numerous entries by a selection panel made up of leaders from various arts, culture and media institutions. It is unveiled to the public at the Design Indaba Expo, which runs every February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Thereafter the Collection, or parts of it, shows at various venues during the year.

The CCDI Handmade Collection focus is on only the very best handmade objects and this exhibition encourages producers and designer makers to push their creative boundaries. It stimulates innovation and creativity and new, marketable products often flow from this event. It is also a prime platform for high quality handmade items, and helps raise the profiles of craft producers and designer makers. It keeps international and local viewers updated on Western Cape craft and design and can lead to lucrative orders for the producers.
